A prominent AFNM (Amhara Fano National Movement) commander, Fikiru Muluye, has surrendered to government forces after accepting a peace call, according to local officials in North Wollo Zone.
Lalibela city officials said Muluye, who had been active with armed groups in the Lalibela, Bugna, Lasta and Meqet areas, handed himself over along with companions to the 303rd Corps. Officials described the move as a positive step toward improving security in the area.
First Deputy Mayor Mesay Wedaje said the decision shows that disputes can be resolved through discussion rather than violence. He added that peace is especially important for Lalibela and its surroundings, where tourism is a major source of income.
Lasta Woreda Deputy Administrator Adane Kassa said armed activity in the area had disrupted daily life, including education and community stability, and that accepting peace would help restore normal conditions.
In remarks attributed to Fikiru Muluye, he said his armed struggle had reached a stage that he now viewed as harmful to the people of Amhara and to the country. He said he had decided to accept the government’s peace offer and return to civilian life.
Local officials and community leaders called on other armed members still in the forests to follow the same path and join peaceful dialogue. They said continued discussions would focus on expanding stability across Lalibela and the wider North Wollo Zone.
The development is being presented by officials as part of broader efforts to reduce conflict and encourage armed groups to lay down their weapons and pursue negotiations
