
The Amhara Regional State has announced that members of armed groups, referred to as Fano militants, have peacefully surrendered to the government in the Awi Zone’s Fagta Lekoma district and surrounding areas.According to Awi Communications, the surrender involved fighters who had entered the forest but returned under the leadership of Ephrem Birged and Deputy Commander Shaleqa Meri. The report states that these individuals handed themselves over to the government peacefully and are now under the administration of the local authorities.During the reception ceremony, Awi Zone Chief Administrator Ato Tewodros remarked, “The solution to all conflicts is the exchange of ideas, dialogue, and discussion.” He commended the people of Fagta Lekoma for upholding the tradition of resolving differences through peaceful means and encouraging militants to return.Ato Tewodros emphasized that while making mistakes is part of human nature, recognizing those mistakes and returning from them is a sign of wisdom and awareness. He added that embracing peace seekers with love will strengthen the joy and impact of peace efforts.The report also conveyed gratitude to the federal defense forces, regional and local security structures, and political leaders who contributed to creating the conditions for this peaceful surrender. Ato Tewodros called on those who have not yet chosen peace to do so and surrender peacefully to the government.Ato Shebe Kende, a representative of the Abekme town and Basic Development Bureau, stated that although the fighters had initially taken the wrong path by resorting to armed struggle, their return is welcomed. “You mistakenly entered the forest, thinking war was the answer to the people’s demands. But now that you’ve chosen peace, welcome back,” he said.Fagta Lekoma Deputy Administrator Ato Tagel Ejigu described welcoming the returning fighters with love as part of the district’s daily routine. He stressed the need to intensify peace efforts to ensure that the sound of gunfire is no longer heard in the area.The officials urged remaining armed elements to follow suit and embrace peace as the only solution, reaffirming the government’s commitment to reintegration and reconciliation.
