Tensions have escalated in the South Gondar Zone as heavy clashes erupted in the town of Kimir Dingay, just days after the Amhara Fano People’s Organization (AFPO) concluded its first formal assembly. The assembly focused on assessing fighter performance and outlining the organization’s path forward.
The AFPO, which maintains significant operational presence in the region, now finds itself in a precarious position. Although once holding the upper hand in South Gondar, the organization has suffered considerable setbacks in recent months. The deaths of prominent commanders including Kefyalew Dessie, Demis Yimer, and Colonel Tadesse, along with the surrender of Tsedalu Dessie, have significantly weakened its leadership structure.
Currently, the Tayitu Regiment — led by Commander Teshome Abebaw — remains the only active and surviving force representing the AFPO in the area. Commander Abebaw’s unit continues to resist as government forces intensify their operations in the region.
Local sources have confirmed that heavy gunfire was heard in Kimir Dingay, signaling intense combat between AFPO-aligned Fano fighters and federal troops. Both government-affiliated sources and pro-Fano media outlets have reported on the incident, each side claiming victory in the ongoing conflict. However, due to the limited independent verification from the area, the situation on the ground remains fluid and uncertain.
