Federal Police Reveal Massive Corruption Losses Exceeding 98 Billion BirrThe Ethiopian Federal Police have disclosed that corruption-related crimes uncovered during the first nine months of the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year caused financial damage exceeding 98 billion birr.According to the report, the losses include 78 billion birr and 134 million US dollars misappropriated through corrupt activities. Authorities stated that, based on the official exchange rate at the time, the total damage surpasses 98 billion birr. The investigation identified the involvement of high-ranking government officials and prominent public figures, including artists, who allegedly abused their positions and influence for personal gain. The findings were presented to the House of Peoples’ Representatives Standing Committee on Legal and Justice Affairs as part of the Federal Police’s nine-month performance report.Deputy Commissioner Mulisa Abdisa, representing the Criminal Investigation Operations Directorate, emphasized the challenges of investigating corruption cases. He noted that such crimes are often complex and carefully concealed, with perpetrators frequently transferring assets abroad to avoid detection. This makes both investigation and asset recovery significantly more difficult, requiring coordination between multiple institutions and reliance on detailed audit processes.Mulisa also highlighted the critical role of audits in uncovering corruption, stating that without them, it would be nearly impossible to assess the true scale of financial damage. Although cooperation with the Office of the Auditor General has improved, he acknowledged that limitations still exist in achieving comprehensive investigative outcomes. The report further revealed progress in exposing previously hidden major corruption cases. These include irregularities in fertilizer procurement involving the Agricultural Corporation and Maritime Transit Authority, as well as embezzlement within Ethiopian Electric Power. Several cases also involve senior officials and public figures accused of exploiting their status. In addition to anti-corruption efforts, Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael reported significant actions taken against smuggling. During the same period, goods valued at 20.5 billion birr were seized. The Federal Police also provided security for 623 key infrastructure projects and federal institutions across the country.Regarding public safety, the report indicated a noticeable decline in street robbery incidents. While 251 suspects were arrested in the previous year, only 64 suspects were apprehended during the first nine months of the current fiscal year, suggesting improved enforcement and prevention measures.
