Amhara national movement, Ethiopia people’s revolutionary party, Enat party and All Ethiopia unity party have come out in a joint statement to address the situation revolving around Birtukan Temesgen, who made an appearance on EBS tv’s “New chapter” which went on to become so controversial that it led to the media station to shut down.
The shocking kidnapping of 18 students from Dembi Dollo University in 2023 remains a painful reminder of Ethiopia’s systemic security failures. Initially blamed on the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), the government later shifted the narrative, accusing Amhara nationalists of orchestrating the abduction to sway public opinion. This deliberate change in blame has left many Ethiopians questioning the motives behind the Prosperity Party’s conflicting statements.
In a joint statement, the Amhara National Movement, Enat Party, Ethiopia People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), and All Ethiopia Unity Party expressed their outrage over the Prosperity Party’s failure to address atrocities committed against the Amhara people. The statement highlighted the case of Birtquan Temesgen, a young woman who bravely spoke out about her abduction and the injustices she endured. Her story is seen as a reflection of the broader systemic issues that have left countless victims without justice.
The parties accused the Prosperity Party of distorting information and neglecting its duty to protect citizens. They emphasized that the government’s lack of action has allowed violence and kidnappings to persist, turning regions like North Shewa Zone into dangerous “death zones.” Recent incidents, including the March 8 and March 14 kidnappings, have further exposed the government’s inability to ensure public safety.
Critics argue that the Prosperity Party’s handling of these issues has been marked by confusion and inaction. While some officials have acknowledged the severity of the problem, their mixed and contradictory responses have only deepened public frustration. The joint statement called for unity among Ethiopians to confront these challenges together and demanded immediate action from the government to address the systemic injustices.
The four parties pledged to continue advocating for justice for victims like Birtukan and urged the public to recognize the systemic nature of these problems. “May God protect our country, Ethiopia, and its people,” their statement concluded.
The joint statement also called attention to the Prosperity Party’s broader governance failures, which have disproportionately affected the Amhara people. From systemic injustices to targeted violence, the parties argued that the Prosperity Party has failed to uphold its responsibility to protect all citizens equally. They urged the government to take immediate action to address these issues and restore public trust.
The four parties pledged to continue advocating for justice for victims like Birtukan and others who have suffered. They also called on Ethiopians to unite in the face of these challenges, emphasizing that collective action is essential to overcoming the systemic problems plaguing the nation.
